The SCRA project has already caused heated discussions about how much technology an artist can use before the artwork losses its humanity and becomes just a mechanized industrial product. Where is the line drawn that separates the hand of the artist from the automated program?
The 12 artists selected for the SCRA project represent a wide range of mediums and genres: from painting to sculpture, from realism to abstract. All of the artists have well established styles that strongly reflect the hand of the artist.
Before this project began, most of the artists had no previous experience with 3D computer modeling or rapid prototyping. Over a 3 month crash coarse, the artists learned how to manipulate this new visual language, and use it to create sculptures that represent their personal creative outlook.
