Fresh from the Printers

SculptCAD held an impromptu open house to display the first round of artwork to come back from the printers. On the wall are 3D computer images by (L-R) Bert Scherarth - Building, and Column, Shane Pennington - Tree Top, Brad Ford Smith - Chicken Neck Johnson, 2 more by Bert, Heather Gorham - Rabbit.

The sculptures for the most part were just unpacked, so the artists have not had the opportunity to work on the physical sculptures yet. What you are seeing is the equivalent of a cake that has just been pulled out of the oven. They still need to be frosted. This is one of two rabbit sculptures by Heather. In this one she has painted the plastic resin to give it a soft velveteen outside and a bleached bone white interior.

David Kirkpatrick finds One Massive 3D Printer

David Kirkpatrick has been doing a lot of blogging about the SculptCAD Rapid Artists Project. His resent post is about a large scale 3D printer in Italy.

Rabbit Rapid Prototype

Here is the finished Heather Gorham rapid prototyped hare. It's resin and I've finished it in graphite.
It measures 15" x 17" x 9.

Jerome Weeks, reporter from KERA Art & Seek and SCRA director Nancy Hairston snap a few pictures of artist Shane Pennington as he demonstrates how the Phantom stylus works. Jerome hung out at the SculptCAD studio for a few hours talking with some of the artists about the SRCA program.
